Internet Services: the Web, Email and Search
The internet is the network, and services are what it can do. We study the World Wide Web, email and search engines, and how to use them effectively.

Chapter 1. Computer networks
Chapter 2. Information security
Chapter 3. Creating web pages
Many people confuse the internet with websites. The internet is the infrastructure that joins computer networks around the world, while the WWW (World Wide Web) is one of the services that run on it: a set of web pages linked by hyperlinks. The WWW was created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989–1991.
A web page is opened with a browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari and others). The address of a page is called a URL: in https://informatik.uz/courses, https is the protocol, informatik.uz is the domain name and /courses is the path to the page. The browser sends a request to the server, the server returns the page code and the browser displays it.
Email delivers messages in a few seconds. An address looks like user@domain.uz: before the @ sign is the mailbox name and after it is the mail server. You can attach a file to a message or send a copy (CC). Be careful when opening links and files from unknown senders.
Search engines (Google, Yandex and others) find the needed information among billions of pages. To get an accurate result, choose the key words, put an exact phrase in quotation marks ("network topology") and exclude an unwanted word with a minus sign. Check the source of what you find: see whether several reliable sites confirm it.
Key takeaways
- The internet is the network infrastructure; the WWW is one of its services.
- A URL consists of a protocol, a domain name and a page path.
- An email address looks like
name@domain. - Precise words, quotation marks and checking the source improve search results.
Practice tasks
- Take the URL of any website and split it into the protocol, domain name and path.
- In a search engine type the query “Muhammad al-Khwarizmi” plainly and in quotation marks, and compare the results.
- Send a classmate (with the teacher’s permission) an email with an attached file and explain the parts of the email address.
