A document made of plain text only is hard to read. For enumerations we use lists: in a bulleted list each item starts with a bullet, and in a numbered list the items are numbered 1, 2, 3 in order. When order matters, as in a recipe or instructions, a numbered list is the better choice.
When data fits naturally into rows and columns, we insert a table. We specify the number of rows and columns and then fill in the cells. Afterwards we can add or delete rows and columns, merge cells, and change borders and colors. A class timetable or students’ marks, for example, are clear in a table.
A picture brings the text to life. We insert it from a file on the computer and resize it by dragging the handles; use a corner handle so the proportions are not distorted. The text wrapping, that is, how the picture sits relative to the text, can also be set. It is good practice to add a short caption under the picture.
Key takeaways
- Bulleted or numbered lists are used for enumerations.
- A table helps to present data in an orderly way.
- Resizing a picture by a corner handle keeps its proportions.
- Short captions for pictures and tables make a document clearer.
Practice tasks
- In a document, make a numbered list called “My Daily Plan” with at least 6 items, arranged by time.
- Prepare a weekly timetable as a table with 6 columns (days) and 5 rows; make the header row bold and give it a colored background.
- Insert a picture you like into the document, make it smaller, choose text wrapping and add a caption.
