Chapter 5. Encoding Information
The Internet is a global network that joins millions of computers and networks around the world. Information on it is placed on web pages, and a set of linked pages is called a website. Every page has its own address, a URL, for example https://informatik.uz.
To view web pages we use a browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge. We type the address in the address bar or click a hyperlink, and the browser opens the page. The “Back” button returns to the previous page, and a “Bookmark” saves a site you like.
If you do not know the address, a search engine (Google, Yandex) helps. Put the most important words in your query: “year Amir Temur was born” gives better results than “everything about Amir Temur”. Put an exact phrase in quotation marks. Do not trust every result: compare information from several reliable sources and check who created the site.
Key takeaways
- The Internet is a global network joining computers all over the world.

- Information should be checked against several reliable sources.
Practice tasks
- Open three sites in a browser, write their URLs in your notebook and bookmark one of them.
- Find the answer to “When was Registan Square in Samarkand built?” in a search engine and compare it across at least two sources.
